Chateau Lafite $4.50 a bottle?

Locke-Ober has maintained one of the finest wine cellars in Boston for
more than 100 years. Originally known as “Ober’s Restaurant
Parisien”, Mr. Ober a native of Alsace France hand selected his
wines in France and introduced them to Winter Place in conjunction with
his Oyster Counter and specialty French cooking in 1875.
In 1892, Mr. Frank Locke joined Winter Place by opening Frank Locke’s
Wine Rooms next store to Mr. Ober. Concentrating on the service of fine
wines Locke made his mark on Winter Place. Many a patron of Ober’s
fine cuisine would frequent Locke’s Wine Rooms before and after
dining next store. The original storage cellars utilized by Locke are
being remodeled by the current owners, into a private dining area for
customers interested in dining in a historic but state of the art wine
cellar.
Needless
to say prices have changed, but Locke-Ober continues to maintain
an exciting wine list concentrating on French, American and
Italian wines that compliment the history of the dining room
and dynamic cuisine served. Currently the list consists of
five hundred plus labels and more than seven thousand bottles,
maintained in the original wine cellar, beneath the Main
Dining Room.
A reprint of the 1939 list (available at the restaurant) will make all
wine lovers envious, with selections such as the following: Chateau Lafite
1926 $4.50, Chateau Leoville-Las Cases 1928 $4.00, Chateau Yquem 1928
$5.75.
